THE 7 PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY

1. energy

Rio do Prado Agro-Turism is firmly committed to renewable energies, using solar thermal and photovoltaic panels. The water heating system is powered by seven solar islands, driven by heat pumps with COP4 efficiency. Interior and exterior lighting is guaranteed by LED technology, while heating/cooling comes from the geothermal energy of the semi-underground construction. The use of low-emissive glass and solar control shutters made from reused eucalyptus from the surrounding forest complement this sustainable approach.

2. water

Each drop is a narrative that echoes the wisdom of nature. From the grey water of baths and sinks to the embrace of the heavens, each drop is a gift in our cycle of life. In the alchemy of our WWTP, water finds renewal, feeding our gardens. Circulate, recycle and reuse is our motto, our promise to the earth that welcomes us.

3. waste

We give priority to the selection of waste, in a dance of colours and textures, where fats and solids are separated in harmony. The garden flourishes with green manure and vermicomposting, feeding our organic farming land.

4. mobility

At the Rio do Prado sanctuary, we offer space to park your vehicle or power it if it’s electric. Our steps give priority to these vehicles in terms of logistics, while guests explore the garden on foot, pedal on our traditional bikes – the pasteleiras – along the kilometres of cycle path next to the enchanting Óbidos Lagoon or ride through the vastness of the landscape.

5. environmental awareness

Our project flourishes with a technological investment that embraces harmony with nature, through the pioneering ‘ecoeasy’ system.Multiple energy and water meters are hidden in the corners of the rooms, working towards a more sustainable Rio del Prado. On the in-house television channel, each guest can contemplate their carbon footprint and, if necessary, smooth out excesses, embracing the generosity of our ‘carbon rate’.

6. eco design

In the construction of our development, we breathe the spirit of nature, where each raw material tells a story.Wrought iron and reused wood, such as eucalyptus peeled from the forest and aged boards used in concrete formwork, are given a new lease of life.An atelier flourishes, skilfully weaving reuse techniques, transforming each vestige into a promise of sustainability, mitigating our footprint on the road to harmony with the Earth.

7. low carbon agriculture

The organic farm, certified by the Sativa control organisation, is a sanctuary of life and nutrition. The fruits of the earth, cultivated with care and respect, flow directly into the heart of our restaurant, where quality is evident on the palate. What’s more, travellers are honoured at the grocery store, taking a piece of our land home with them. This dance of consumption, between fields and market, echoes like a whisper in the earth, a promise of respect for nature and a tribute to the richness of the motherland.
